Karl's childhood was nothing special. He lived with a large group of like minded people, that considered themselves an extended family, even if they weren't related by blood.  They were nomadic by nature, and more than a few had gifts that went beyond the norm, including him.  He was taught early on to hide his gifts and he was taught tricks to use them without it being obvious. Namely fortune telling.  A male fortune teller was a bit of an oddity, so he was able to make quite a bit of coin from it. That is up until the war came.
