Kiera Knightly as Amelia Chantrelle Matilda Cavanaugh

Amelia, better known as Matilda, was born in the capitol city of Edinburgh. While her parents weren't rich, they weren't quite poor either. They could be best described as comfortably middle class.

From a young age Matilda showed a talent for numbers, so her parents made sure that she got the best education they could provide, even if it meant that they had to skip a meal or two or that her and her brother and sister had to get their clothes from a second hand shop. She was the favored child and this left her brother and sister jealous of course. They were having to sacrifice so her parents could give her what they didn't get. They did not treat her kindly.

When she was old enough Matilda was apprenticed to an accountant. She was doing quite well as an accountants apprentice, that is until things went sideways. The result at the end was her joining with a pirate crew, first as cabin girl at the age of 19. She moved up in rank and has been in a variety of pirate crews. When Rafael put out the call for crew members she answered immediately. Learning of her skill with accounting and knowing her reputation as a fierce woman, he made her the quartermaster. Rafael knew she wouldn't take any guff or backtalk from his crew.

As part of the circus cover she is better known as the Queen of Rats. She has a dozen of the ships rats trained to perform all manner of tricks, from walking tightropes, riding mini-bicycles, and a variety of other tricks one wouldn't think a rat could do.

As the time of the pirate waned it grew harder and harder to make a living as a pirate. Especially when you had the Navy breathing down your neck. Many tried to take the Bloody Jewel and bring its crew to justice, and no one tried as hard or failed as miserably as Colonel Maxwell Von Strader of the Bavarian Navy.

One day though he got lucky and captured Rafael, Matilda and part of the crew. It seems they had the last laugh though. The colonel so wanted to see them hang, but all he saw was the Governor giving Captain Rafael a Letter of Marque and setting the crew free to fight as a Privateer against his enemy, the Prussians in the short lived Bavarian-Prussian war.
