10 Facts About Blue Quartz

  1. Blue Quartz, like the other four cities of Quartz, is built atop a giant's body. The five Quartz giants walk a slow pattern across the territory. They kneel to eat food or drink water five times a year, causing quakes in each of the cities.
  2. Gravity is subjective in Blue Quartz. Down is the direction of the giant. For example, someone standing on the back of the giant's forearm might see the horizon over their head or even the ground over their head, depending on the position of the arm. This can be very disorienting to visitors who expect the sky to always be above their heads.
  3. Residents of Blue Quartz use the giant's body as building and crafting material. Layers of skin are peeled off and cured to be used as leather, long hairs are woven for cloth or even to make homes, and even the giant's blood and sweat are purified for drinking water. If the giant minds being harvested in this fashion (or in having buildings anchored into its flesh) it hasn't protested. Eating the giant's flesh is considered taboo.
  4. Most residents of Blue Quartz are painters. The best make a living from painting while the majority drudge away at more mundane jobs while hoping for their big break or discovery.
  5. Because most residents of Blue Quartz are painters, the city is a riot of colors. Murals cover almost every square inch of free space and bleed one into the other.
  6. Blue Quartz has criminals as well but even they are painters. The largest criminal organization in Blue Quartz are the Grayscale Masks, known for wearing monochrome masks and clothing. The Grayscale Masks are associated with the Cartel and, in addition to the usual thieving, murder, extortion and protection rackets they also engage in rampant acts of graffiti and vandalism.
  7. Humans who were born in Blue Quartz have blue hair, though the shade can vary from as light as powder blue to as dark as midnight blue.
  8. Blue Quartz is governed by the Lord Mayor Severen Navalant, a painter renowned throughout Krystallos for his rather provocative images based on first-hand accounts of the Great Invasion. Lord Mayor Navalant was elected by popular vote five years ago and just recently won his bid for reelection.
  9. Every store in Blue Quartz sells paint and/or painting supplies in addition to their normal wares. It isn't uncommon for one to go into a smithy and come out with a bucket of nails, a fireplace poker and a jar of sunset red paint.
  10. While most citizens of Blue Quartz are also painters, a small minority are, instead, critics. The critic faction of Blue Quartz are popular because their opinions can make or break someone's career.
